Alternate Assignment Article EBooks

I apologize for my absences on campus this week. My mother had major surgery and I needed to be there for her. Surgery went very well and she is doing much better as of today. I love ODU and I'm so sorry for not being able to attend the meetings.

Here is my summary of the E-books article:

Summary of Ebook Business Models

By Mirela Roncevic

This Ebook article basically discussed the Ebook availability within the library environment. It states that to keep up with the current times, technology, and cost, Ebook might be the logical way to go. The article also discusses different formats of Ebooks and their costs; such as the Patron-driven acquisition (PDA) format which is the most talked about version and is just beginning to be used by certain academic libraries. The cost of the PDA version would be limited to the information that patrons uses and need. This would mean the content that gets used, gets purchased saving on wasted money on content/information not needed by the patrons. The other version discussed is the short-term loans (STL). STL is a version that allows libraries a good solution to obtain access to content they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. The STLs are similar to the PDAs models in that the patron;s demands ultimately drive how the library spends its budget. The main different is the ST:Ls are rental agreements not contracts for ongoing access, unlike PDAs which need a contract for a certain period. STLs could save money on an academic library's budget by short term rentals.  There are many factors that are to be considered when purchasing ebooks within the library, the main focus would be to discuss the vendors terms and agreements that would be upheld if the library decides to purchase from the vendor.

  1. I still, in a way hate to see in Ebooks in a library. I know they have to keep up with the times and all, but I still kind of wish that libraries were just for actual books. Ebooks are nice, but I still would rather read real books over all. It's something about the feel and smell of them that I really love.

  2. My question is, how many libraries around the country are still having a hard time being able to afford E-Readers for their students? E-books are nice, but those readers are not cheap and I wonder how many schools just can't afford them.

  3. While doing work on a mock budget plan last semester I email Amazon and the have a set up specifically for libraries which allows the buying of one copy by the library that is then shared throughout the network. This book can be used by more than one person at a time as well. Beyond that, you do not need an extremely large about of e-readers because there are apps for other portable devices and downloads for computers.

My question is why are only those two formats spoken about?

  4. E-Readers will be a very hot topic in the upcoming years. There is still very little research out about them and their benefits. I learned that there are different formats for E-Readers which is nice because this allows libraries to tailor their purchases to meet their needs. I also learned that short term loan format can save the library money and would be cheaper in the long run. I like the PDA also because you are only paying for what is needed.

As with all new technology, there are still many unresolved issues with E-Readers. While my questions are many, I think the most intriguing is about how libraries are going to handle the e-Book collections for the E-Readers? Are libraries going to purchase an e-Book for each E-Reader which makes all the books on the E-Reader unavailable when the E-Reader is checked out; or are libraries better off purchasing the e-Book title and downloading it on the E-reader when the E-Reader is checked out, which could result in a logistical nightmare and pose some legal questions?

  5. Hello Leigh,

I am sorry you missed the campus visit, but I am glad your mother's surgery went well. Your Ebook review is very interesting. To help with an easy way to have a quick link to your review or if you made a video about the E-Readers this can also be a good quick link. With a QR Code, I would have a sign of the E-Book Title and have a QR Code underneath so people would have a direct link to your E-Book Review on here. As for an Aurasma, I would hold the camera over an E-Book and (if you had made a video) it would link you directly to the video made about EBooks.
